Eucalyptus - Eucalyptus globulus
Eucalyptus trees are quick growers and many species reach a great height. There are a great number of species of Eucalyptus trees yielding essential oils, the foliage of some being more odorous than that of others, and the oils from the various species differing widely in character.
Eucalyptus is one of the most powerful natural antiseptics. It is widely used in baths, massage, room sprays and inhalation during the cold and flu season. It is also excellent for treating fevers, bronchitis, sinus and allergy problems.
A great way to reap the benefits of Eucalyptus and other essential oils is to use them in a diffuser to kill airborne germs. If you don't have a diffuser, simply simmer dried Eucalyptus on the stove, or combine water and essential oils in a spray bottle. Studies show that a two-percent dilution of Eucalyptus oil kills 70 percent of airborne staph bacteria.
Eucalyptus aids the whole breathing process. It can help regenerate lung tissue and functions as a good expectorant and cough suppressant. It is a cooling agent and it can help stimulate thinking and increase concentration under emotional pressure.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil Properties Include: analgesic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, balsamic, decongestant, expectorant, deodorant, diuretic and stimulant.
Dried --- Herb Usage
Tea - 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried, crushed leaves. Steep 10
minutes. Drink up to 2 cups per day. We do not recommend making
a tea infusion with essential oils. (See caution below). If you
must, talk to a licensed herbalist for proper dosage amounts.
Bath - Place 1/4 cup of Eucalyptus in a small muslin bag or large tea ball. Steep for several minutes and leave in the bath with you. For maximum healing benefits, make an infusion (see recipe below) and pour it into the bathtub with you.
To Make a Simple Infusion - Steep 1/4 cup herb for 15 to 20 minutes in a quart of water that has just been boiled. Let cool. Never boil herbs because they will lose their volatile oils and much of their healing qualities. An infusion will keep for up to 7 days, so it is easy to make up ahead of time.
Pure Essential Oil Usage
Disinfect - A couple of drops of Eucalyptus essential
oil simmering in a pot of water purifies and disinfects the air
in your home.
Massage - Mix together 1/2 teaspoon Eucalyptus oil and
1 tablespoon pure olive oil and shake well - very good for arthritis.
Steam Inhalation - To relieve cold and flu congestion,
place a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil into a bowl of very
hot water. Lean over the bowl (approximately 8 inches from the
water, or choose a comfortable distance for you), and drape a
towel over your head. Inhale the steam deeply for 5-10 minutes,
(again, the length of time should be determined by your comfort
level), remove the towel from your head, and blot the moisture
from your face. Please remember - steam inhalation is not a method
to be used by asthmatics.
Another easy way to do a steam inhalation is by covering the shower drain with a washcloth and turning on the hot water. Add a few drops of Eucalyptus or any essential oil to the running water and the washcloth. Close the bathroom door, creating your own steam room. Stay in the bathroom about 10 minutes. Do not get in the shower with only hot water turned on.
Caution: When taken internally, Eucalyptus oil is highly
poisonous. Fatalities have been reported from ingestion of as
little as a teaspoon. Eucalyptus should not be used if you have
high blood pressure or epilepsy.
