Monthly Tip: Watch for St. Johns Wort's yellow flowers that bloom this month around Solstice time, June 21st. Harvest it by hanging it upside down to dry in a cool dark place. Crush the dried herbs & flowers for a natural anti-depressant tea. Or make your own homemade infused oil with the flowers, stems and leaves. The flowers add the red hypercin which make the strongest infused oil of the year. Beneficial for healing skin irritations, rashes and sunburns.

Summer Aromatherapy Blends for the Entire Family
By Judith Fitzsimmons, Certified Aromatherapist
and co-Author of
Seasons of Aromatherapy

School's out for the summer! These first really hot days feel great. Shorts and sneakers everywhere. Smell the flowers. Celebrate graduations and weddings. Hike through the mountains. Enjoy the sunshine lasting longer into the evening. Have the freedom of no regular dinnertime. Let's have ice cream instead. There are so many wonderful things about late Spring and early Summer, but there are also some challenges such as bug bites, sun burns, poison ivy, back pain from extensive gardening, and more. Fortunately, aromatherapy can come to your rescue with safe, effective, fast-working solutions.

For Him

While shaving is a year-round activity, during the Spring and Summer, the skin feels more sensitive to the harsh razor blades. In fact, facial skin does change during these seasons, being more porous, allowing greater exposure to UV rays, and responding to increased perspiration. This is the time of year you want to treat your skin with extra care.

Razor Burn Relief - Put 3 drops Chamomile, 2 drops Lavender, 3 drops Lemon, and 5 drops Geranium into one quart of water. Fill a spray bottle and spritz the face immediately after shaving,

or for a more concentrated effect,

Put 3 drops Chamomile, 2 drops Lavender, 3 drops Lemon, and 5 drops Geranium into 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, vitamin E cream, or even olive oil. Massage a small amount of the blend into the shaved area.

For Her

Switching gears from the school season to the summer vacation season. Switching gears from winter clothes to summer clothes. Switching gears from indoor activities to outdoor activities. Switching gears from hearty winter meals to lighter summer meals. With all of this switching gears going on, your stress level may increase.

Stress Relief - Put 10 drops of Chamomile, 5 drops of Geranium, 10 drops of Lavender, and 5 drops of Lemon into a small jar.

From these combined essential oils, place 15 drops into a warm bath or sauna and soothe away the stress of the day. You can also place 10 drops into a cup of water and put into a spray bottle and occasionally spritz yourself during the day to calm yourself down and get back in control. And finally, with the other 5 drops, put them into 2 ounces of a lotion or 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and massage your temples, neck, forehead, and behind your ears as a wonderful relief for stress-induced headaches.
Ladies -  the shaving relief blend is also a fantastic recipe for legs and the shaved bikini area.

For the Kids

While our children are thrilled that school is out for the summer, they too have to make adjustments. From the school schedule to the summer camp schedule, increased anxiety over making friends at day camp, and worrying about having enough time to keep their school friendships alive and well.

Relaxing Bath: Put 4 drops Lavender, 2 drops Chamomile, and 2 drops of Sweet Orange into the bath and let your child unwind in preparation for bedtime.

For the Entire Family

Here are two "must have" blends for this summer:

Poison Weed Rash Relief: Put 5 drops Lavender, 5 drops Chamomile, 5 drops Tea Tree, and 2 drops of Geranium into one cup of water. Spray on the affected area and let dry naturally.

Sunburn Pain Relief: Put 8 drops Lavender, 2 drops Chamomile, 5 drops Peppermint, and 2 drops of Geranium into one cup of water. Spray on the affected area and let dry naturally.

Ease The Stress
Honesty Is a Great Stress Reliever
by Debbie Mandel

Honesty is the best policy; Confession is good for the soul; the truth will set you free - these homespun proverbs compress profound truths about how to lead happier and healthier lives. The implications are that if we become our authentic selves, express ourselves truly and freely, then we will feel more joyous and let other people into our lives. Currently, many people are engaged in massive cover-ups: who they are, what they want and what they contribute; cosmetic surgery is an example. Its popularity in TV shows like Extreme Makeover and The Swan indicate that a taut mask is preferable to laugh lines, and rivulets of expression. The rippling effect is that many are hiding who they are on the inside by accommodating, trying to fulfill other people's expectations, obeying other people's rules and pretending to beNo wonder that most of my workshop participants feel mildly depressed and negative. Conformity and suppression are energy drains.

The other day during the course of my reading I came across a phrase used by Alcoholics Anonymous in the 12 Step Program - fake it until you make it: A seeming contradiction to truthful living, yet ironically, wonderful advice about how to become more authentic. By speaking, dressing, eating, exercising and acting the role of who we wish to become, we will transform ourselves to fulfill that role. By taking an honest inventory of our limitations and capabilities we can develop our capabilities to do better and be better. Our failures need to be truthfully acknowledged because they serve as practice for success. Recognizing that each one of us is a unique work of art in progress provides the necessary confidence to explore, evaluate, grow and change. When we feel comfortable with ourselves, what we say and do without second guessing whether we said the right thing or did a good job, then we have come to an honest acceptance of who we are and the world we live in. That's a great stress relief! Here are some suggestions to be more honest:

* Begin to express your true opinions on small matters such as the food you eat, the clothes you like and the books you enjoy. Gradually you will express your opinions on larger issues.
* If you make a mistake, don't blame others. Assume responsibility and try to remedy it.
* Keep on asking questions which will lead to a quest for more honest answers.
* When you are about to reach a decision, what are the signals your body emits? If you don't feel good, ask yourself what part of your body is involved and why? Trust your gut reaction.
* Whatever you resist will persist. Face your "angels and demons" and make peace with them. You are the control center and have the power of perception. "The mind can make a heaven out of hell or a hell out of heaven."
* Stop apologizing for who you are and who your children are. For example, if you have a hyperactive, autistic, or retarded child, stop apologizing for him or her.
* If you sense that a family member or friend is having a problem, speak up and offer a suggestion or emotional support.
* Whatever you do, let the true you emerge in your work or play. For this to happen you need a good self-concept- be able to answer this question: what is it that you bring to life's table- what is your specific contribution? If you don't know, get started on having an open and honest conversation with yourself!

Tea of the Month - Rose Hip Herbal Tea

Once the petals have fallen off a rose, all that remains attached to the stem is the rose hip, also known as the dried fruit of the rose. Rose Hips are one of the most natural and abundant sources of vitamin C, much more so than oranges. Besides being a major supplier of vitamin C, Rose Hips also contain vitamin E, vitamin K, riboflavin, and folate.

Rose Hips help the body defend itself against infections, especially colds and flu, by stimulating the immune system. Rose Hip's anti-inflammatory properties are also useful in relieving inflammation caused by sore throats and skin irritations.

The astringent properties of Rose Hips also make it beneficial for treating diarrhea, bladder, and kidney problems. Considered to be a great body tonic, Rose Hips help combat exhaustion, as well as alleviate stress and nervousness. $6.50
